Pointing Out the Wind
I have thought about why it was easy, when for twenty-eight years the smallest defiance of my parents had been agonizing, and the answer taught me something about how manipulation actually works, and how it ends.
My mother’s texts deployed the exact machinery that had controlled me my entire life: the invocation of family, the appeal to guilt, the reminder of obligation, the suggestion that my father’s very health depended on my compliance.
Every one of those levers had, in the past, worked flawlessly.
Pull the family lever, and I would set aside my own needs.
Pull the guilt lever, and I would apologize for things that were not my fault.
