Chapter 4 — What the Money Wasn’t

Here is the thing I most need to be understood, because without it the whole story looks like it is about money, and it was never really about money.

Once the family knew the check was going to be mine, they did not simply let me pay for the dinner they would have ordered anyway.

They ordered a different dinner.

The menu became a different document in their hands the instant they understood they were not holding the consequences of it.
