It was a quarter to nine.
The dessert would reach the table in a few minutes.
The check would reach my father-in-law about ten minutes after that.
I had done the small arithmetic of it in my head without meaning to, the way you track a storm you know is coming: the card run, the folder closed, the walk back, the folder reopened at the head of the table.
I did not need to witness it.
