The hum had been dread.
I understood that, sitting on my own sofa with my own wine.
For two years a low frequency of dread had been running underneath every family event, the dread of the folder, the dread of the joke, the dread of watching my husband smile at my expense, the dread of the sum I would smilingly pay and the smaller sum of myself I would pay along with it, and it had run so constantly that I had stopped hearing it as dread and had started hearing it as the ordinary background noise of being married into a big warm family.
It was not ordinary.
