I want to be clear about that, because there is a version of a reforming husband that is really just a wife’s second full-time job, the project of carefully managing a man toward the realization he should have reached on his own, and I had decided I was done with second jobs.
I did not plead my case to him again after that night in the kitchen.
I did not send him articles or cry at him or stage conversations.
I simply lived, calmly, in our house, paying for myself and no one else, declining to apologize, and I let his family be exactly who they were in front of him, undistracted by any drama of mine, and his family, left to themselves, made my case far more eloquently than I ever could have.
The truest thing I did for my marriage that month was to get out of the way and let Derek finally look at what had been in front of him the whole time.
