Brooks sat down beside my bed. “Can you tell me what happened?”
I could have let it all pour out of me like blood. Instead I gave her the opening, not the ending. “My stepfather hurts me,” I said. “My mother helps him cover it up.”
Brooks’s face went hard. “Do you have any proof?”
