Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
“She told me many things tonight, and I’m only now beginning to believe them,” Florence admitted quietly.
The maternity floor stayed completely peaceful, except for the distant hum of medical monitors and the faint footsteps of a night staff member.
I squeezed my fingers tightly around the key and swallowed hard.
“Is Sylvia in any immediate danger right now?” I asked with real concern.
Nurse Florence softened her tone as she looked at me.
“She’s completely exhausted after losing more blood than the attending doctors expected, but she’s stable now.
The babies are very small, but they’re certainly not helpless, and our team is watching them very carefully.”
