Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
“You weren’t given an official invitation,” she pointed out coldly.
“Then it’s a good thing I’m no longer waiting for your permission to show up,” I answered steadily.
She searched my face, perhaps looking for the obedient son she had controlled for decades.
“Alexander, if you dare walk into that boardroom tomorrow, you could lose everything you own,” she warned solemnly.
I glanced over at the two small bassinets resting under the warm yellow lights.
“Everything that truly mattered was already being stolen from me while I was asleep,” I answered quietly.
