Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
“No, I don’t,” I admitted openly.
“But I finally know who I’m standing beside.”
Her eyes filled with tears, but she wiped them away quickly.
“Alexander…” she began quietly.
“I’m not standing here asking you to forgive me for my past mistakes tonight,” I interrupted gently.
“I honestly don’t know if I can ever fully forgive you,” she admitted truthfully.
“I completely understand that,” I replied softly.
“And I’m certainly not asking you to trust me blindly again,” she added.
