Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
“Because there are no wooden shelves in the quiet room,” she revealed smoothly.
I turned my attention back to the call.
“Marcus, if you want any chance of saving yourself from prosecution, tell me the whole truth right now,” I ordered sternly.
His voice broke with obvious panic.
“I honestly had no idea what they were planning to do!” he cried out desperately.
“That doesn’t answer my question,” I reminded him coldly.
“I was just trying to protect my job and my livelihood!” he pleaded.
“You forged Sylvia’s resignation letter, didn’t you?” I accused directly.
