Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
“I won’t sign anything,” I promised firmly.
“And don’t let your parents convince you that protecting the family name means protecting the people who abuse power,” she added powerfully.
I gently wrapped my fingers around her hand and squeezed softly.
“I should have listened to your warnings months ago,” I admitted quietly.
“Yes, you really should have,” she whispered softly.
There was no magical comfort in her words, but they carried an undeniable truth we both needed to face.
I stood up and walked toward the door.
