Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
“Because Sylvia specifically told me not to give it to anyone unless you were physically standing here beside her,” Florence explained carefully.
My heart beat faster against my ribs.
“Who personally delivered this to you six months ago?” I asked sharply.
“An elderly woman with very sharp eyes,” Florence revealed.
“She introduced herself as Ms.
Evelyn Shaw.”
I stared down at the red wax seal in complete shock.
“Why on earth would Evelyn Shaw give a sealed package to a hospital nurse?” I asked, bewildered.
