Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
I turned toward the steel elevator doors at the end of the hall.
“Who exactly have you been watching over all these years?” I asked, stopping at the doors.
Nurse Florence’s face showed a deep sorrow I couldn’t understand.
“I’ve been protecting your grandfather’s very last promise,” she answered softly.
The metal elevator doors slid open with a soft chime.
I stepped into the empty car, carrying the brass key in one coat pocket and the heavy parchment envelope in the other.
Just as the automatic doors started to close, Nurse Florence gave one last, haunting warning.
