Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
“Your father’s lawyers told me to put together the financial background report attached to it,” Marcus explained quietly.
“I was specifically told to make Sylvia look broke, mentally unstable, and completely dependent on family charity.”
“And what did your financial check actually show?” I asked sharply.
“It showed that every one of those claims was false,” Marcus confessed softly.
“Sylvia had her own financial assets, an active consulting contract, and she’d been paying all her medical bills out of her own accounts.”
“Why didn’t you correct the false information in the filing?” I demanded coldly.
