Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
The familiar smell of old dust, dried cedar, and aged paper hit me at once, along with a faint, unexpected trace of fresh coffee in the air.
The hallway inside looked frozen in time.
A large grandfather clock stood still near the staircase, and childhood photos of my family were still hanging along the wall.
But I immediately noticed that several picture frames had been laid face down on the runner table.
“Someone’s been in here recently,” Marcus whispered nervously.
“Very recently,” I agreed, walking up to the table.
I went to the nearest overturned photograph.
