Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
I slid the small brass key into the keyhole.
To my complete amazement, the tumblers inside turned smoothly without a single sound.
Marcus let out a nervous breath behind me.
Inside the greenhouse, rows of long-forgotten wooden planting beds filled the space.
Old clay pots sat stacked on dusty shelves, and a heavy wooden workbench stood against the far glass wall, covered with a thick gray canvas tarp.
I walked to the workbench and pulled the heavy tarp off in one quick motion.
Under the tarp lay a polished wooden box and a heavy iron ring holding three different keys.
