Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
“People have told me that many times over the years,” I replied gently.
“You certainly didn’t get them from your father,” she said plainly.
“No, I suppose I didn’t,” I agreed quietly.
She turned her head and looked gently toward the empty wooden cradle in the corner.
“Your grandfather carved that cradle by hand after your mother tragically lost her very first child,” Evelyn revealed softly.
The unexpected revelation made my breath catch in my throat.
My parents had never once mentioned a child before me.
