Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
“She also asked whether the newborns had been registered under the Montgomery family name,” Florence added.
My jaw tightened as a wave of suspicion swept over me.
“What did you tell her?” I demanded.
“I told her hospital policy strictly prevents me from discussing patient details over the phone,” Florence explained smoothly.
Her steady eyes held mine with incredible intensity.
“She already knew that Sylvia was carrying twins, Alexander,” Florence warned me.
I looked down at the brass key lying in my hand.
“Of course she already knew,” I muttered bitterly, realizing how completely I had been kept in the dark.
