Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
“Sylvia is recovering in a hospital bed right now,” I pointed out.
“The formal spousal acknowledgment can easily be signed in her hospital room with legal counsel present,” Evelyn clarified.
“And what if Sylvia refuses to sign?” I asked, preparing for any outcome.
Evelyn looked at me with deep seriousness.
“Then you’ll fully respect her decision and walk away,” Evelyn said plainly.
The simple words carried enormous weight, and I understood their deep meaning completely.
I had spent months foolishly believing that our past marriage gave me every right to demand answers and obedience from Sylvia.
