Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
Jude’s Hospital.
Soft morning sunlight was coming through the window of Room 418 when I walked in.
Sylvia was awake, sitting propped up in her bed, while Nurse Florence checked her vital signs against a medical chart.
The twin boys were sleeping peacefully in their warming bassinets, their tiny chests rising and falling in a steady rhythm.
Sylvia looked over at me as I came in.
“You found the property,” she said softly.
