Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
Sylvia looked back at the two sleeping babies.
“Then what exactly are you asking me for right now?” she asked gently.
“I’m just asking for the chance to be a real father to Julian and Oliver,” I answered honestly.
“You’re already their father,” she pointed out gently.
“I mean being a father in the way that actually matters day to day,” I clarified softly.
A soft, emotional breath slipped from her lips.
“Then you can start by going over to that sink and washing your hands properly,” she instructed softly.
