Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
“I’m still learning how to make the right choices,” I admitted quietly.
“So am I,” she said softly.
I reached my hand toward her, but stopped a few inches away, refusing to force any physical contact.
Sylvia noticed my restraint.
After a brief moment of hesitation, she slowly reached out and laid her fingers gently over mine.
The touch was hesitant and careful—not a sudden return to our old marriage, but an honest acknowledgment of a new beginning.
“Your mother will try to turn the board meeting into a public argument about family honor,” Sylvia warned softly.
