Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
“Sylvia is my ex-wife, yes, but she didn’t manipulate anything,” I answered steadily.
“Then why are you standing in this boardroom acting as her public defender?” he demanded.
“I’m not acting as her defender,” I corrected him firmly.
“I’m presenting verified corporate evidence to the board.”
“That so-called evidence came from a compromised source,” my father said coldly.
“It came straight from your own father’s founding trust,” I shot back.
For the first time in my whole life, I saw my father’s unshakable composure slip.
It was a barely noticeable flicker of worry in his eyes.
