Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
I looked at her with real curiosity.
“Did my grandfather actually know Sylvia personally before he died?” I asked.
“He knew she had incredible courage and complete integrity,” Florence answered warmly.
“Did he expect that she would eventually find the hidden records?” I pressed.
“He prayed hard that someone in the family would have the courage to look for them,” she clarified gently.
“Why didn’t he just tell me the truth himself while he was still alive?” I asked softly.
Nurse Florence’s clear eyes softened with deep wisdom.
