Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
“Thank you for everything you’ve done for us, Florence,” Sylvia said softly.
Florence gave a warm, sincere smile.
“Take good care of each other,” Florence advised gently.
“Not just because legal family ties require it, but because decent people deserve it.”
Outside the hospital doors, the heavy rain had stopped completely.
The afternoon air felt crisp, clean, and fresh, though I fully understood that our past hadn’t magically disappeared.
The painful past was still there.
Our legal divorce was still real.
