Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
“Alexander,” she said gently, cutting off my rambling.
I met her clear gaze.
“I’m not walking away from my professional responsibilities, Sylvia,” I explained softly.
“I’m just permanently changing which responsibilities come first in my life.”
Sylvia looked down at baby Julian sleeping peacefully in her arms.
After a quiet moment of thought, she looked back up at me.
“You’re welcome to stay and have dinner with us tonight,” she offered softly.
It certainly wasn’t an invitation to move back into her life as her husband.
