Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
Sylvia slowly closed her eyes and took a soft breath.
“Yes, I was,” she answered.
“You were carrying twins,” I added, my voice tight.
“Yes, twin boys,” she confirmed softly.
“You knew without any doubt that those children were mine?” I asked directly.
She opened her eyes and looked at me with complete clarity.
“I knew for a fact that they were ours,” she corrected gently.
The small difference in her choice of words landed deep in my chest.
