Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
My throat tightened unexpectedly at the sound of my family’s surname attached to those names.
“You actually gave them the Montgomery name,” I said quietly.
“I was never going to deny them their real heritage just because the adults in their lives behaved foolishly,” she said plainly.
Her gentle words carried a sharp edge of truth that I couldn’t deny.
I stood up and walked over to the two clear plastic bassinets set near the far wall under warm yellow lamps.
Inside each bassinet lay a tiny sleeping baby wrapped snugly in patterned hospital blankets.
