Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
The small room felt as if it were closing in around us.
“Then how can you possibly say you didn’t betray us?” I asked, bewildered.
“Because I did every one of those things specifically to keep the company from being gutted,” she revealed steadily.
I let out a quiet, sarcastic breath, shaking my head in disbelief.
“That’s exactly what every guilty person says when they get caught,” I said coldly.
Sylvia flinched slightly at my harsh words, but she held her steady gaze.
“I know how it sounds,” she admitted softly.
