Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
“My father would never steal land from a charitable trust his own father set up.”
“He didn’t see it as stealing,” Sylvia explained calmly.
“In his mind, he was just repositioning corporate assets to grow the family’s wealth.”
She shifted a little in the bed, wincing as a sudden wave of pain crossed her face.
I instinctively stepped toward her to help, but she raised a hand to stop me.
“I’m fine, really,” she insisted, catching her breath.
“I gave birth to twins a few hours ago, so I’m allowed to be a little uncomfortable.”
