Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
“It belongs to a lock at the old Montgomery Estate building,” Sylvia told me.
“The old corporate building on Laurel Street?” I clarified.
“Yes, that exact place,” she confirmed.
“That property has been boarded up and abandoned for more than five years,” I pointed out.
“Not every part of that building is as abandoned as it looks,” she replied softly.
I sat back down in the plastic chair and folded my arms.
“What’s stored inside that building?” I asked plainly.
“A large collection of original records,” Sylvia explained clearly.
