Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
I froze completely on the polished hospital floor.
Active labor.
We had been divorced for seven full months.
Suddenly, every date and timeline I had deliberately refused to work out over the past year started lining up in my mind.
“No, that’s impossible,” I whispered, shaking my head in denial.
Nurse Florence looked at me with a firm, unwavering expression.
“Two tiny boys were born early tonight, and neither of them made a single cry when they arrived,” she revealed quietly.
The long hallway seemed to tilt under my feet as the weight of her words struck me.
