Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
“If you knew all this, why didn’t you show me proof that the letter was forged?” I asked, turning back to her.
“Because by the time I understood what was happening, your father had already convinced you I was a corporate spy working for Apex Global,” she explained sadly.
“You could have fought the accusation,” I argued.
“I did try to fight it,” she repeated softly.
“When?” I asked, desperate for details.
“The awful night you came home to our apartment and told me to pack my things and leave,” she answered quietly.
That memory hit me like a physical punch to the stomach.
