Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
“Seven months ago,” I repeated, working through the timeline.
“Exactly three days before our divorce settlement was finalized in court,” she added pointedly.
I stood up again, completely unable to stay seated as the pieces of the puzzle started falling into place.
“What was our divorce supposed to achieve for them legally?” I asked, my voice rising a little.
Sylvia looked up at me with deep sadness in her eyes.
“It was designed to separate you from the family business long enough for your father to complete the asset transfer without needing your signature,” she revealed gently.
