Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
I remembered him smiling at Sylvia during a family dinner and calling her the only person in the room who actually read the fine print.
I had laughed at the remark back then, but he had stayed completely serious.
“What exactly does acknowledging responsibility mean legally?” I asked, wanting clarity.
“It means your spouse’s signature was required before any major corporate restructuring could take place,” Sylvia explained.
“And if I happened to be divorced at the time of the transition?” I pressed.
“Then your father’s legal team could successfully argue that the spousal clause was completely null and void,” she revealed.
The horrible truth finally became crystal clear in my mind.
