Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
Sylvia had been standing alone by the entrance, holding a thick blue envelope against her chest.
I had seen her standing there, but I had deliberately looked away and walked faster to avoid talking to her.
She had softly called my name as I went past.
I had kept walking toward the exit without looking back.
“I thought it was just another formal legal notice from your attorney,” I admitted, feeling deep shame.
“It was the last personal letter your grandfather wrote before he died in the hospital,” she explained softly.
“Why didn’t you just mail it to my home afterward?” I asked.
