Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
Sylvia looked toward the bassinets where our sons were sleeping peacefully.
“Your father filed an emergency court petition late this afternoon,” she revealed softly.
The last of the warmth drained out of the hospital room.
“An emergency petition for what?” I asked, my blood running cold.
“An emergency petition asking for temporary legal guardianship of the twins,” she revealed.
I stared at her in complete horror and disbelief.
“On what legal grounds could he possibly claim guardianship?” I demanded.
“On the grounds that I deliberately hid the pregnancy, that I’m mentally unstable, and that you knew nothing about the children because I kept them from you,” she explained plainly.
