Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
“I’ve been secretly living in the caretaker’s cottage on the property for the past six months,” she admitted softly.
“Why on earth would you stay there?” I asked, stunned.
“Because it was the one place no one in your family would ever think to look for me,” she explained simply.
“Is that where you’ve been keeping the original corporate records all this time?” I pressed.
“Some of the main documents are kept there,” she confirmed.
I pressed my hand against my coat pocket, feeling the brass key.
“Then what does this key actually open?” I asked again.
