Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
Florence looked at me with complete sincerity.
“Sylvia told me to make sure you got that key before your family reached the hospital, and I followed her instructions,” Florence said plainly.
I turned my attention back to Sylvia.
“What exactly is built under that old property?” I asked directly.
“A hidden room your grandfather built decades ago,” she answered softly.
My mind suddenly brought back childhood memories of the estate’s huge stone cellar.
I remembered thick stone walls, dusty shelves, and the lingering smell of old cedar wood.
