Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
“Your grandfather trusted your father to carry on the family legacy.
By the time he realized your father had very different ambitions, he simply didn’t have the physical strength to fight a public legal war.”
“And so he dropped that huge burden right on my shoulders?” I asked, feeling a rush of bitterness.
“He left the responsibility to whoever in the family was willing to go looking for the truth,” she corrected softly.
Before I could say another word, the door swung wide open.
