Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
“You’ve been predicting this exact moment for months, Eleanor,” Sylvia said directly.
My mother turned her cold gaze toward Sylvia.
“You were never supposed to carry this high-risk pregnancy to term in secret,” my mother remarked smoothly.
The statement was spoken with complete detachment, which made the words far more frightening.
The whole room fell into an uncomfortable, heavy silence.
I turned my head and looked at Sylvia in horror, then turned back to my mother.
“What on earth is that supposed to mean?” I asked, my voice dangerously low.
