Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
My mother lowered her voice, trying to take back control of the conversation.
“You clearly don’t understand the serious legal reality here,” she said sternly.
“Then explain this so-called legal reality to me right now,” I challenged.
“You and Sylvia are legally divorced,” my mother said coldly.
“She deliberately hid her pregnancy from you.
You knew nothing about the birth until tonight.
She has no permanent home, no current job, and no extended family support in this state.”
“She has me,” I said clearly, the words leaving my mouth before I could overthink them.
