Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
My mother seized on my hesitation and pushed forward.
“The infants can easily be placed in temporary family care until the court sets up permanent arrangements,” my mother suggested smoothly.
“‘Temporary family care’ means putting them under your direct control,” I pointed out coldly.
“It means putting them somewhere completely safe,” she corrected firmly.
“It means handing you full legal control,” I countered.
Her face flushed with suppressed anger, but she kept her voice quiet and controlled.
“We have a solemn duty to protect the integrity of the Montgomery family legacy,” she declared.
