“We’re clearing out the closet today,” Sloan said, pulling open the folding wooden doors.

“The agreement was that I would stay here through the winter,” I said.

Sloan pulled three dark skirts off their wire hangers and dropped them into the bottom of the plastic bin.

“The agreement changed when you started searching through Mark’s desk drawers,” Sloan said.

She pulled out an armful of blouses and tossed them on top of the skirts without folding them.

“Mark spoke to a social worker at the county care intake office yesterday afternoon,” Sloan said, leaning over the bin.
