When I came back to the study, Grandpa was sitting in my father’s leather chair with his fingers steepled. I showed him the footage.
“He’s not in Europe,” I said, and my voice cracked straight down the middle. “He’s sabotaging the house. He’s building the case for the doctor.”
Grandpa’s face didn’t soften. It set like granite.
“Your brother owes a great deal of money to people who do not send collection letters, Avery. Gambling. Nearly two hundred thousand dollars.”
“How do you know that?”
“Because I watch the shadows your father thinks he hides in.” He didn’t blink. “Grant and Elaine could not have covered that debt without draining my accounts.
