Shanidar Z — The 75,000-Year-Old Neanderthal Woman Whose Crushed Skull Was Rebuilt From More Than 200 Pieces
Then a new team arrived at the cave, and found Shanidar Z.
The Cambridge Excavation Begins
In 2015, researchers from the University of Cambridge and the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research began new excavations at Shanidar Cave.
The team was led by Emma Pomeroy and Graeme Barker.
Their equipment, analytical methods, and protocols were substantially more advanced than anything available to Solecki in the 1950s.
They were not primarily hunting for new Neanderthal remains.
They were returning to the burial cluster — the area of Shanidar 1 through 4 — to investigate it with modern methods.
