But it describes the community whose members were buried there — people who made sophisticated tools, processed animal hides, manufactured composite weapons, and maintained a complex technology that required knowledge transmission across generations.

The Geography of the Shanidar Community

The Shanidar Neanderthals did not live exclusively in the cave.

The cave was a base, probably used during certain seasons, with the community ranging across the surrounding landscape in patterns determined by the availability of game and plant resources.

The evidence for this ranging comes partly from the tools themselves.

The stone used to make Mousterian tools at Shanidar includes materials available locally in the Zagros, but also materials that came from sources further away — evidence that the community had access to raw materials beyond the immediate vicinity of the cave, either through direct travel or through exchange networks with other groups.

Animal bone from the cave deposits provides additional evidence.
