If Neanderthals were capable of full symbolic culture — if they had something analogous to belief systems, ritual practices, and culturally transmitted meaning — then the Shanidar burials fit naturally within that framework.

If their capacity for symbolic behavior was limited or secondary to modern human influence, the interpretation of the burials becomes more complicated.

The evidence does not yet settle this question definitively.

What it does show is that the boundary between Neanderthal and modern human cognitive capacity is considerably blurrier than older models assumed.

The Question She Leaves Open

The face of Shanidar Z, carefully built from more than two hundred fragments of bone, looks back across 75,000 years.

She was older — an adult who had lived long enough for her teeth to show significant wear, for her bones to carry the evidence of age.
