Both things are true.

Both matter.

The Zagros as a Neanderthal Homeland

The Zagros Mountains are not an incidental backdrop to the Shanidar story.

They are the specific environment that shaped the Neanderthal population that used this cave, and understanding them helps explain both why the cave was used and what the people who used it were capable of.

The Zagros run approximately 1,500 kilometers, from southeastern Turkey through Iraq and Iran toward the Strait of Hormuz.

They create a distinct ecological corridor — a zone of varied habitats at different elevations, from the dry plains of Mesopotamia at the mountain base to the alpine meadows above the tree line.
