The Cambridge team’s work at Shanidar has not ended.

The excavations continued after 2019, subject to the constraints of access to Iraqi Kurdistan and the broader challenges of fieldwork in a politically complex region.

Additional Neanderthal remains have been identified within the cave but not yet fully excavated.

The spatial relationship between these remains and the main burial cluster is not yet fully understood.

Future excavation seasons, with the continuing benefit of modern recording and analytical methods, will add to the dataset.

There are also questions about the parts of the cave that have never been excavated at all.
